Ukraine War

British Intelligence Ukraine war map as of Sep. 11

In a continued response to the threat posed by uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks, British intelligence update on Ukraine provides an update as of September 11, 2023, regarding developments in Russia’s Pskov Oblast, near the Estonian border. The governor of the region has taken measures to organize volunteer security patrols aimed at intercepting and preventing further UAV attacks against the Kresty air base.

The initial report highlighted the damage caused to two IL-76 CANDID transport aircraft on August 29, 2023, as a result of UAV attacks on the Kresty air base. These attacks were believed to have been launched from within the Russian Federation due to the limited range of quadcopter UAVs involved.

Volunteer Security Patrols:

In response to the ongoing UAV threat, volunteer security patrols have been organized in Pskov Oblast, with reportedly up to 800 citizens signing up to participate. These volunteer patrols are organized into groups of 50 and deployed across various municipalities, with a primary focus on patrolling border areas and critical infrastructure, particularly airports and airbases.

Deterrence and Defense:

The creation of these volunteer security patrols serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it is expected to act as a deterrent against further UAV attacks launched from the immediate vicinity of the air base. Secondly, it provides an additional layer of defense against quadcopter UAVs, which are challenging to neutralize using small-arms fire. To effectively combat such attacks, Russian forces will still require air-defense systems equipped with surveillance capabilities and both kinetic and electronic means of interception.

Shortage of Trained Security Personnel:

The use of volunteers for security patrols suggests a potential shortage of trained security personnel within Russia. This underscores the seriousness of the UAV threat and the urgency with which regional authorities are responding to it.

The update from British intelligence on the situation in Russia’s Pskov Oblast highlights the ongoing efforts to counter the threat posed by UAV attacks. The organization of volunteer security patrols represents a proactive approach to safeguarding critical infrastructure and deterring future attacks. As the conflict continues to evolve, these measures underscore the need for comprehensive security strategies and a multifaceted response to emerging threats in the region.
