Kate Middleton’s Bedtime Story Choice Sparks Joy and Memories

In her role as the founder of the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, Kate Middleton understands the profound impact of early experiences on children’s development. Recognizing the importance of bedtime stories, Kate actively promotes the practice as a means to support the healthy growth of children under five.

Beyond being a simple sleep aid, reading to young children contributes to language development and enhances social skills. Even the act of snuggling during reading time has been identified by the Child Mind Institute as having positive effects on brain development.

One of Kate’s favorite bedtime stories is “The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark” by Jill Tomlinson, first released in 2004. The narrative follows a young barn owl named Plop, who initially hesitates to join his parents on nighttime hunting adventures. Through encounters with various characters, Plop discovers the joys of the dark, including stargazing, camping, and watching fireworks, ultimately overcoming his fear.

Kate reminisced about her personal connection with the book, stating, “I loved this book as a little girl, and listening to my own children reading it has brought back so many wonderful memories.” Her choice to share this particular title holds special significance. In February 2022, the Duchess of Cambridge read “The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark” to young viewers on the “Cbeebies Bedtime Stories” show, broadcasted on the BBC.
