Meghan Markle’s time in the British monarchy may have been short, but royal insiders claim it was marked by a deliberate rejection of long-standing traditions.
The Duchess of Sussex, who tied the knot with Prince Harry in 2018, reportedly displayed signs from the very beginning that she was not ready to conform to the strict expectations of royal life.
According to royal expert Richard Eden, Meghan’s tenure in the Royal Family was remarkably brief, lasting just 22 months before her and Prince Harry’s controversial exit in March 2020. Yet in that short period, she allegedly broke royal protocol numerous times.
Eden revealed that Meghan’s actions were far from accidental. “Given the volume of headlines Meghan Markle created, people forget how brief her royal tenure was,” he explained. “From her marriage in May 2018 to her acrimonious departure in March 2020, there were more than a dozen examples of her breaking the rules – about one every two months.”
One standout example came during the christening of her son, Prince Archie. Meghan wore a Dior outfit, a choice that defied tradition. Royal mothers typically select clothing by a British designer for such significant occasions.
Eden emphasized that such decisions were not simply matters of fashion. In his view, they were calculated moves that signaled Meghan’s unwillingness to fully embrace her royal role.
“There are numerous other examples of similar protocol breaches,” he said. “What they suggest to me is a conscious, committed rebellion on her part.”
The royal commentator argued that Meghan never accepted the unwritten agreement that comes with marrying into the monarchy. That agreement, often referred to as “the royal contract,” demands total devotion to public service above personal ambition.
It also requires members of the Royal Family to put aside their personal brand in favor of upholding the image of “The Firm” and its centuries-old traditions. For Meghan, this seemed to be a price she was unwilling to pay.

Supporters of Meghan argue that she faced an impossible situation. They believe she was criticized for breaking rules that desperately needed updating and for refusing to be silenced on issues she cared about.
Critics, however, insist that she underestimated the depth of sacrifice required to serve as a senior member of the Royal Family. They claim that her inability to adapt caused unnecessary tension behind palace walls.
