In a rare move, filmmaker Kevin Smith has chosen not to reach out to his friend Ben Affleck amidst the turmoil surrounding Affleck’s marriage to Jennifer Lopez.
During a recent interview at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Smith explained his decision to keep his distance despite the ongoing speculation about the couple’s imminent divorce.
Kevin Smith, known for his close friendship with Affleck and their numerous collaborations, addressed the situation candidly in his conversation with People Magazine.
He acknowledged the divorce rumors that have been making headlines, saying, “Obviously, he’s been going through a thing, or at least that’s what it says in the press and whatnot.”
Despite being aware of Affleck’s difficult situation, Smith decided against reaching out. He shared, “I, being his least trustworthy friend who’s very loose-lipped… My wife was like, ‘Oh, you should reach out to him.’”
Smith’s reasoning for staying out of the situation was rooted in his own self-awareness. “I was like, ‘The last person he needs to hear from right now is the guy who chats a lot,’” he explained.
Smith felt that it would be more respectful for Affleck to make the first move when he’s ready. “So when he’s in a good place, he’ll let me know,” Smith added, demonstrating his understanding of the need for space during challenging times.
Looking ahead, Smith mentioned their upcoming joint project, “Jay and Silent Bob,” which is scheduled to start shooting in the fall. “We shoot in the fall, so I’ll be reaching out to him,” Smith revealed.

He also noted that Affleck might make a cameo in the project, indicating that their professional relationship remains intact.
“I haven’t been anywhere near the situation,” Smith concluded. “I keep reading. You guys have been providing most of the information that I know.”
Smith’s approach highlights a rare instance of discretion and respect for privacy in the midst of a publicized personal crisis.
His decision to let Affleck reach out in his own time underscores a supportive yet non-intrusive approach to friendship during tumultuous periods.
