Meghan Markle’s Secret Acts of Defiance Inside the Palace Finally Exposed by Royal Expert

It seems Meghan Markle’s most notable acts of defiance against royal tradition did not end in 2018. A royal commentator has now detailed a string of moments that he believes were deliberate challenges to palace protocol.
Richard Eden, the Daily Mail’s Diary Editor, claims that the Duchess of Sussex’s time in the Royal Family was short but filled with actions that could be interpreted as a quiet rebellion.
Speaking to the Express UK, Eden reminded readers just how brief Meghan’s royal tenure really was. “Given the volume of headlines that Meghan created, people forget how brief her royal tenure was,” he explained. “It spanned a mere 22 months, from her marriage in May 2018 to her acrimonious departure in March 2020. In that time, there were more than a dozen examples of her breaking the rules – about one every two months.”
Among these examples, Eden pointed to Meghan’s engagement dress, which was sheer — something considered a major “no-no” by royal standards. Its price tag of £56,000 also stood in stark contrast to Kate Middleton’s more modest £385 engagement outfit.
To Eden, this was no accident. “This was Meghan declaring, when she barely had her foot in the palace door, that she would be treating royal protocol as ‘guidance only,’” he remarked.
The expert listed other moments where Meghan’s sartorial choices made waves within royal circles. He described these as “more crass sartorial gestures” that signaled her independence from tradition.
Perhaps the most controversial example was Meghan’s choice of attire for Prince Archie’s christening. Instead of wearing a piece by a British designer the long-standing custom for royal mothers but Meghan opted for a Dior dress.
Eden said this decision was more than just a fashion statement. “Traditionally, a royal mother wears a piece by a British designer for every christening. Meghan’s choice looked like a clear breach.”

The royal commentator believes these moments, taken together, tell a larger story. “There are numerous other examples of similar protocol breaches. And what they suggest to me is a conscious, committed rebellion on her part,” he claimed.
From his perspective, Meghan never accepted what he calls “the royal contract” the unwritten agreement that comes with joining the monarchy.
That contract, Eden explains, offers significant benefits and prestige, but requires complete dedication to public service. Personal ambitions and branding must always come second to the traditions and reputation of “The Firm.”
By ignoring these expectations, Eden argues, Meghan signaled early on that she was unwilling to put the institution above her individuality.
Supporters of the Duchess of Sussex, however, see these choices differently. They argue that Meghan brought a refreshing modernity to the monarchy, refusing to conform to outdated traditions simply for the sake of appearances.
Critics counter that such an approach undermined the unity and image of the Royal Family, making it more difficult for her and Prince Harry to sustain their roles as senior royals.
Whether seen as acts of independence or open defiance, Meghan Markle’s decisions during her short time in the Royal Family continue to spark debate and as experts like Eden remind us, the signs of her eventual departure were there from the very beginning.
