Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has reportedly started a new artificial intelligence (AI) company called X.AI Corp.
According to sources, the new company aims to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which Musk and other AI experts recently called for a six-month freeze on developing due to potential dangers posed to society. Musk has been hiring AI engineers and researchers and is currently in talks with investors from SpaceX and Tesla to raise capital for his new venture.
The news of Musk’s latest project comes after he acquired hundreds of graphics processing units (GPUs), which enable high-powered computing required for AI and high-end graphics. Musk has also been secretly working on an AI project at Twitter, where he has reportedly hired two researchers from top AI startup DeepMind and purchased 10,000 GPUs.
Musk’s previous demand for a suspension in AI development was due to the potential hazards AI posed to society, but now he hopes to develop “truth-seeking” AI models that avoid political bias. The global spending on AI systems is predicted to reach nearly $100 billion by 2023, indicating an increasing investment and acceptance of AI technologies across various sectors.
