Prince Harry Cuts Ties with Royal Duties Amid Residency Change
Prince Harry has officially severed any remaining ties to royal duties following his change of residency to the United States, according to recent reports.
Since stepping down as senior working royals in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have been residing in Montecito, California, with infrequent visits to the U.K.
In a significant development, documents related to Prince Harry’s eco-travel company Travalyst revealed that he has switched his primary residence from the U.K. to the U.S.
Royal expert and author Tom Quinn highlighted the profound implications of this residency change, stating that it effectively cuts Prince Harry off from any remaining royal duties. “Because he is a prince of the royal blood and still fifth in line to the throne, Harry is, in theory, still a counsellor of state, charged with carrying out the official duties of the monarch should King Charles become incapacitated,” Quinn explained to The Mirror.
However, with Prince Harry’s change of primary residence, fulfilling such duties becomes impossible. This decision comes amidst a prior statement issued in 2022 by the crown to Parliament, specifying that only working members of the Royal Family would be called upon to fill in for the monarch.

Tom Quinn emphasized the significance of Prince Harry’s residency change, suggesting that it reflects his acceptance of the rift between himself and Britain. “With his change of primary residence, Harry is saying: ‘If Britain doesn’t want me, then I don’t want Britain,'” Quinn remarked.
The move signifies a definitive shift in Prince Harry’s relationship with his royal responsibilities and underscores his commitment to his new life in the United States alongside Meghan and their children. As the Duke of Sussex continues to carve out his own path outside the confines of royal duties, this latest development marks a significant chapter in his journey of self-discovery and independence.
