Meghan Markle’s First Visit to Kensington Palace and Prince William and Prince Harry’s Rift
The rift between Prince William and Prince Harry has been one of the most talked-about issues within the British Royal Family in recent years. Ever since Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from the Firm in 2020, the relationship between the once-close brothers has deteriorated, leading to public and private tensions. A new analysis by a royal expert sheds light on the possible origins of this deep-seated conflict.
Royal author Robert Jobson has recently weighed in on the feud, pointing to Meghan Markle’s first visit to the Prince and Princess of Wales’ apartment at Kensington Palace as a significant turning point. According to Jobson, this visit marked the beginning of the tension between the two couples, which has since evolved into a full-blown rift.
Jobson’s insights suggest that Meghan was surprised by the differences in lifestyle between the two brothers. He wrote, “It is understood that when Meghan and Harry had gone round to have drinks at William and Catherine’s apartment, while they were still living at Nottingham Cottage opposite, Meghan had been ‘taken aback’ at the disparity between the brothers.” This observation implies that Meghan was struck by the stark contrast in living conditions between her and Harry’s modest accommodations and the more lavish setup of William and Catherine’s home.
This moment, according to Jobson, could have been the “beginning of all the tensions between the two couples.” The disparity in their living situations might have highlighted deeper issues related to their roles within the Royal Family, their treatment by the institution, and the expectations placed upon them.
Prince Harry himself touched on this visit in his memoir, *Spare*, providing his own account of the event. He recalled the 2018 visit to his brother’s home, describing Meghan’s reaction as they walked through William and Catherine’s apartment. “We walked over one late afternoon. I saw Meg’s eyes widen as we entered their front door, walked past their front sitting room, down their hallway, into their study. ‘Wow’, Meg said several times,” Harry wrote.
The contrast between the brothers’ living conditions seems to have been a significant factor for Meghan, who, according to reports, was not necessarily jealous but was certainly surprised by the difference in lifestyle. This experience, as recounted by both Jobson and Harry, may have contributed to the growing sense of alienation that Harry and Meghan felt within the Royal Family.
The visit to Kensington Palace, however, was not the only source of conflict. Harry’s memoir, *Spare*, details a physical altercation between the two brothers, during which William allegedly called Meghan “rude” and “difficult.” This incident further strained their relationship, as Harry felt that his brother was not supportive of his marriage and was overly critical of Meghan.

The Independent, citing both *Spare* and Jobson’s book, highlighted how this initial visit to William and Catherine’s home became a trigger for the ongoing feud. “I am not saying Meghan was jealous, but she was really surprised how lavishly Harry’s brother was living compared to where they were living,” the publication quoted.
The growing tension between the brothers, exacerbated by these and other incidents, has left the Royal Family divided. The once inseparable siblings have found themselves on opposite sides of public and private conflicts, with little sign of reconciliation in sight.
As Prince William and Prince Harry continue to navigate their complicated relationship, it is clear that the roots of their feud run deep. The disparity in their lifestyles, the pressures of their roles within the monarchy, and the differences in how they and their spouses were treated by the institution have all contributed to the ongoing rift. While the exact path forward remains uncertain, it is evident that healing this divide will require addressing the underlying issues that have driven the brothers apart.
