Google Pixel Fold 2 Leaks Suggest New Tensor G4 Chip and October Launch

Google is reportedly gearing up for the launch of the Pixel Fold 2, the successor to last year’s Pixel Fold, with significant upgrades in the chipset and internal specifications. Leaks suggest that the foldable smartphone will be powered by Google’s in-house Tensor G4 chip, codenamed “zumapro,” marking a departure from earlier prototypes that featured the Tensor G3 chipset. The Tensor G4 is also expected to be the driving force behind the upcoming Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro models slated for release in October.

According to information obtained by Android Authority, the Pixel Fold 2 is currently undergoing testing with the Tensor G4 chip. This development implies a potential launch alongside the Pixel 9 series in October, rather than a May release as seen with the original Pixel Fold.

The leaked specifications indicate a notable improvement over its predecessor, with the Pixel Fold 2 prototypes featuring 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. This marks an increase from the Pixel Fold’s 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The expanded memory is expected to accommodate enhanced on-device AI features as part of Pixie.

The original Google Pixel Fold, launched in May 2023, featured a 7.6-inch inner display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 5.8-inch full-HD+ OLED outer display. Powered by the Tensor G2 SoC, it boasted a triple rear camera setup, a 4,821mAh battery with 30W charging support, and wireless charging capabilities.

While the Pixel Fold 2’s launch details and pricing remain undisclosed, the anticipation around its upgraded chipset and specifications suggests a significant leap forward in Google’s foldable smartphone technology. As the tech giant continues to refine its offerings, the Pixel Fold 2 could set new benchmarks in the foldable smartphone landscape.
