LG and Meta Announce Strategic Collaboration in Extended Reality Devices and Technologies

LG and Meta revealed a strategic collaboration on Wednesday, focusing on the development of extended reality (XR) devices and technologies. This collaboration follows Meta’s introduction of the Meta Quest virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality headsets and LG’s establishment of an XR business unit within the Home Entertainment division in late 2023.

The joint effort aims to leverage Meta’s platform and LG’s content/service capabilities from its TV business to create a distinctive ecosystem in the XR domain. LG envisions significant synergies in the development of next-gen XR devices by combining Meta’s diverse core technological elements with LG’s cutting-edge product and quality capabilities.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly met with LG Electronics CEO William Cho and Park Hyoung-sei, President of Home Entertainment at LG Electronics, at LG Twin Towers in Yeouido, Seoul. Discussions centered around business strategies and considerations for next-generation XR device development. During the meeting, LG leadership explored Meta’s XR devices, including the Meta Quest 3 headset and Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, expressing interest in Meta’s large language model (LLM) stack and on-device AI integration.

The collaboration is expected to enhance LG’s hardware and product development efficiency while incorporating Meta’s core technology. Rumors suggest that the two companies have been collaborating on the development of the Meta Quest Pro 2, with a potential launch slated for 2025. Details about the partnership, including whether both companies will contribute to separate products or create co-branded devices, remain undisclosed.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s visit to South Korea is part of a broader tour of Asia, where he is anticipated to meet with President Yoon Suk Yeol and other leaders in the technology space. This visit marks Zuckerberg’s first known trip to South Korea in ten years, with subsequent stops planned in Japan and India as part of the tour.
