While on an engagement in Newcastle on Tuesday, Prince William provided a brief update on the health of his wife, Princess Kate, who is currently undergoing preventative chemotherapy for cancer.
This interaction took place during his visit to the suicide prevention charity, James’ Place Newcastle, where he greeted well-wishers.
In a conversation captured on Instagram by @walesvideos, a well-wisher asked Prince William about his family’s wellbeing. “Do you mind if I ask how your wife and children are?” she inquired.
Prince William responded, “We’re all doing well, thank you.” When she further asked specifically about Princess Catherine, he reiterated, “We’re all doing well.”
Princess Kate’s cancer diagnosis was publicly announced in a personal video posted on social media on March 22. The video came after a months-long absence from public appearances, following an abdominal surgery she underwent in mid-January.
In the video, Princess Kate shared details about her health journey: “The surgery was successful; however, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.
My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”
She expressed the emotional toll of the diagnosis: “This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.
As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment.
But most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I’m going to be okay.
As I’ve said to them, I am well, and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal, in my mind, body, and spirits.”
