Google CEO Sundar Pichai Addresses Bias in Gemini AI, Vows Fixes Before Relaunch

Sundar Pichai Acknowledges Bias and Unacceptable Responses; Pledges Substantial Improvements

Google CEO Sundar Pichai informed employees on Tuesday that the company is actively addressing biases and unacceptable responses in its Gemini AI tool. Pichai acknowledged that some of the text and image responses generated by the model were biased and deemed “completely unacceptable,” leading to a pause in the tool’s use last week.

In a note to employees, Pichai stated, “Our teams have been working around the clock to address these issues. We’re already seeing a substantial improvement on a wide range of prompts… And we’ll review what happened and make sure we fix it at scale.”

The Gemini AI tool, formerly known as Bard, was recently rebranded and introduced with paid subscription plans. However, inaccuracies and biases in historical depictions prompted the temporary suspension of the tool’s usage.

Google now plans to relaunch Gemini AI in the next few weeks after ensuring substantial improvements and addressing the concerns raised by users. The move is part of Google’s efforts to compete with Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which was launched in November 2022.

Last week, Google entered into a contract with social media platform Reddit worth about $60 million per year. This deal allows Google to use Reddit’s content for training its artificial intelligence models, highlighting Reddit’s efforts to generate new revenue ahead of its anticipated stock market launch amid tough competition for advertising dollars.
