WhatsApp Reintroduces “View Once” Feature for Photos and Videos on Desktop and Web Versions
In a recent update, WhatsApp is reintroducing the “View Once” feature for photos and videos on its Web and desktop versions, according to a report from WABetaInfo. The feature, previously available on mobile platforms, allows users to send media files that can only be viewed once before being automatically erased from the chat.
The “View Once” option for photos and videos is reportedly accessible on the caption bar in the drawing editor on WhatsApp for Windows. The company is extending this feature not only to Windows but also to macOS and linked devices like iPads. WhatsApp Web users will also benefit from the reintroduction of this feature, enhancing the multimedia-sharing experience across platforms.
The move comes after the feature was initially removed from the desktop and Web versions due to security concerns. However, user feedback highlighting the utility of the “View Once” option prompted WhatsApp to reconsider, acknowledging its value in allowing users to view media without consuming unnecessary storage space on their devices.
The report indicates that the feature is gradually rolling out to eligible users, with some already gaining access over the past few weeks. Users are advised to ensure their applications are updated to the latest versions to access the “View Once” option.
In related news, WhatsApp is adjusting its backup policies for Android users. Starting in December, WhatsApp backups on Android will continue to function as long as users have sufficient cloud storage space on their Google accounts. Users reaching their storage limit will need to free up space on Google Drive to resume backups. Additionally, WhatsApp is encouraging users to use the “Disappearing Messages” option to manage storage and privacy concerns.
Furthermore, WhatsApp is prompting users to add their email addresses to their accounts. While not visible to WhatsApp contacts, the email address serves as a secondary identifier for tasks like sending verification codes. This update aligns with WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience, privacy, and data management on its platform.
